Custom Shop Finished Guitar Bodies
Finishing and refinishing guitar bodies are our specialty. Send or bring us your guitar body and we'll turn it into a Work of Art. You choose your colors and the style, and we'll do the rest. You must remove all the electronics and hardware from your body prior to submitting it for refinishing. Or we can supply a new strat style Alder body for an additional $159 (other woods available upon request).
The Finishing Process
The vivid art designs and marbleized finishes are created entirely by hand and none of these designs can be replicated (so no 2 body designs are alike). We use a superdurable special material we call "Glaze". This glaze chemically cures over a laquer, candy and/or pearl basecoat. Different color tints or pearl powders are chosen, mixed and combined, and then carefully introduced into each susequent layer of the glazing process. The marbleized effect is acheived by blending, shaping, cutting & heating the colors into each seperate layer which produces an amazing multi-dimentional effect. A final top-coat of clear glaze is applied adding additional intensity. When completed, the guitar not only looks awsome, but it resonates into tomorrow! In fact, this remarkable glaze coating will approximate the resonance of a nitro finished body weighing 25-30% more. So, you get more resonance with less weight.
Each layer of glaze is equivalent in appearance, and has the depth perception, shine and vibrance of up to 10 coats of lacquer. One layer takes approximately 18 hours to set and cure sufficiently before an additional layer can be applied. The artwork and the entire finishing process is completely hand crafted (no automated machinery, no shortcuts) and is labor intensive.
The artwork and finish alone requires anwhere from 12 to 20 hours of actual craftwork (depending on the complexity and intricacy of the design) to yeild the exclusive finished product. Every Phil Wayne Custom finish is unique to itself with regard to its design, color and artwork, and each is named, signed and dated when completed.
I can assure you that this is a totally unique process that no one else is doing. We conceived and developed this process and have perfected it over time. The appliction process and the materials that are used truly enhance the sound and resonance of a solid-body instrument. This is a time consuming and exacting process that requires artistic skill, absolute conditions, precise temperatures, exact mixtures of the chemical components, a very controlled environment, patience, expertise, and a steady hand (along with some good fortune). When all goes well, the finished product yields a unique finish that enhances the sound and resonance of the instrument, is hard as glass, has an extremely high resistance to scratching, and looks incredible. If at any time during the process you run into a problem, there are usually no quick fixes or shortcuts to remedy the issue. Often time you must strip it down to bare wood and start over!
Approximate costs for refinishing a body:
There is an initial $25-$100 prep fee (depending on the condition of the body you are supplying). A single color base coat of your choice is $100. The cost of each layer of our glazing material is $119 (each layer is eqivilent in appearance to 10 coats of nitro but cures to a much harder density).
Halo-Flash Flip-Flop finish (which will change colors as you view it from different angles) with 2 layers of our glaze is $395-$495.
- Marbleized finishes (includes Basecoat and require a minimum of 2 layers of glaze in order to achieve the effect) $549 & up.
Each layer of resin increases the depth of the 3D effect. If you let us know what you want we'll let you know what it will take to achieve the result you're looking for. Matching headstocks are also available for an additional 25% cost. (Personalized and/or Custom Finished pickguards and/or back plates are also available).

Reference the marbleized Phil Wayne “Dragon 2” bass (above pic). It has 3 layers of glaze with color and a clear glaze topcoat) 4 color marbleized finished edged body w/ black base coat in front, Halo Flash Flip-Flop Finish on back with 3 layers of glaze - $695; add the matching custom headstock, pickguard and neckplate, and a similar complete custom piece of work would total between $900-$1000.
